Artist Statement

In short, this work is about the arrow of time. I am concerned with change, regret, and the impossibility of going backwards.

Jon Bocksel

Biography

Jon Bocksel was born in Queens, NY in 1983. He spent most of his childhood in the suburbs of Chicago and just off the highway somewhere in New Jersey. Away from his painting practice he also uses photography as well as super 8mm film to investigate his surroundings. Jon's work has been reviewed by Color Magazine, Jettison Quarterly, Williamsburg/Green Point Art News, Luxtapoz and The New York Times. Jon Bocksel received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2005, and lives and works as a commercial sign painter in Brooklyn.

Artist Statement

My work is an investigation of language that appropriates symbols and uses words to create new forms. I invite the viewer to ponder the dissemination of the written word and to create their own meanings from these newly rendered configurations. The bullet hole series was my first experience using a gun. Each painting in the on-going series uses a common phrase that contains the word "hand."
