David Brown creates minimalist ink drawings which upon close inspection are formed entirely of obsessively repeating icons of eyes. Further away the patterning of the eyes creates a textural, woven and at times almost op-art feel. These elements serve especially well in enhancing the voyeurism and sensuality of Brown’s frank figurative drawings, yet add uniqueness and power to his non-representational works as well.
Peter Gerakaris’ works are macro and microcosm in one. Here, the consistency of scale, limited palette and obsessive detail provide a stage for his organic imagination. The infinitesimal vastness of space and the complex beauty of nature are represented simultaneously, because even one of the smallest components of the universe is part of a whole. Japeth Mennes creates an intricate labyrinth of line. Subtle, delicate variations in line thickness and pressure form a complex of undulating cartographic elevations, contours of a puzzling and beautiful maze. Other works experiment with line in similar ways to create both abstract and figurative imagery further exploring how the nuances of line create form.
Holly Laws plays with scale on a miniaturizing level forces an attention to detail and construction. Her fragmentation of the whole further augments this focus on specificity and scale. A meticulous hand and a great deal of time are needed to produce the resulting sculptures which convey much regardless of their size.
Erik Oost focuses on the details of light and the abstraction, refraction and reflection of its qualities on varying surfaces. Impressionism at its most modern, forms are fashioned entirely by small, carefully chosen blocks of color creating radiantly abstract landscapes.
